If he is there for Department Head (DH) school, it may not be worth uprooting your family and moving. They are at school 10+ hrs a day studying and were counseled the first day of school to tell their families they wouldn?｢どｨび｢t really see them or have time to spend time with them for the 6 mos. they are there. If you choose to stay put, he collects RI BAH, but can live in the barracks for free w/ free laundry. Some of the officers go in on apartments together if they don?｢どｨび｢t want to live on base and don?｢どｨび｢t want to uproot their families. They usually get 3-4 days house hunting leave their 2nd or 3rd mo at DH school, which allows them and you to find a place where you are going after school is completed.
Newport itself is expensive, but if you live in the surrounding areas, things are cheaper.
If you need a short term place to stay for a visit, there is an AMAZING B&B in Newport run by a Vietnam vet and his wife: The Sarah Kendall House. You can also stay w/ your officer in BOQ for a couple of days as long as the office is informed. The guilded age mansions are worth a look, and the oldest synagogue in America (http://www.nps.gov/tosy/index.htm) is also present and was mentioned by George Washington. I?｢どｨび｢d say that if they are short-term orders, unless you really have a hankering to see the northeast, it?｢どｨび｢s not worth it to move, but it is totally worth a weekend or week visit if you have the chance. Also, commute times to the airport are about 1/2 hour, and BostonLogan is still within driving distance (1.5 hr in bad traffic) if the ticket is cheaper there.
